- APOLOGIES.
- ==========
- The operator for the 80 metre transmission of the news last
- Sunday (number 810 22/05/94) offers his apologies for the
- failure to go to air. It was due to circumstances beyond his
- control and it is hoped today will be operated normally. It
- is known that most of the 80 metre viewers use this outlet as
- a back-up or for interest only, using the 40 or 20 metre or
- VKNET Packet distribution to obtain accurate copy, so
- hopefully no-one was seriously inconvenienced....
- -----------------------------------------
-
- WA storm
- ========
- We have heard that only minor damage has been reported by ama-
- teurs from Perth in Tuesday's storms. The major sufferers were
- VK6CF who lost a large beam and other antennas, and VK6TN, the
- HF Amtor mailbox station lost its long wire, which was
- replaced posthaste, leaving the operator with a large load of
- timber to turn into firewood -- it was a rather large tree.
-
- In other cases, only tree damage to long wires was reported.
- This is good news as the television coverage showed severe
- damage which was apparently mostly confined to beachside
- suburbs.
-
- There was however an overnight city-wide blackout due to the
- large number of power lines damaged by falling trees and other
- debris. This report was received from Clem VK6CW who reported
- no damage to his installation.
- ---------------------------------------
-
- Now we have some news of Syd VK2SG who is recovering, albeit
- slowly, from his quite debilitating illness. But the colour is
- fine and Syd is getting around much better and on air every
- day. Syd should be back to good health before long.

- June. Contact Jim VK2BQS, Col VK2CTD or Pat VK2JPA for further
- information.

- you not ??
-
- ANARTS WW RTTY/Digital DX Contest 11-12 JUNE Part 2
- -------------------------
- Contest period: from 0000Z Saturday to 0000Z Monday (48 hours)
-
- Multipliers: each ARRL DXCC country, and each call district of
- VK, JA, VE, and W count as separate countries on each band.
- QSOs with ones own country is not valid for multiplier count.
- (W6 may work W7 or W5 for mult, but no W6). Each continent QSOd
- counts as a multiplier (maximum of six).
-
- QSO Points: Use Exchange Points Table to determine QSO points.
- (See the table in the RTTY Journal or apply to ANARTS for a
- copy).
-
- Scoring: Total QSO points x total multipliers x number of
- continents worked (max. 6). After the above calculations,
- world stations add 100 points for each VK QSO on 20M, 200
- points for each VK QSO on 15M, 300 points for each QSO on 10M,
- 400 points for each VK QSO on 40M, and 500 points for each VK
- QSO on 80M.
-
- Awards: Awards will be issued for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place on
- world basis, and also on country basis.

- Subject: contests during 4-5 june
- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- Note that during the first weekend of june (that'll be within a few days :)
- a few contests on 50 MHz will be held simultaneously. Here in Europe
- (Region 1) the two most important contests will be the UK6MG contest and
- for the first time this year, the IARU 50 MHz contest.
- Hopefully wel will experience some trans atlantic multi hop E openings
- to the States (from Europe i.e.) and please note that the rules in region 1
- require the *complete* locator, i.e. all 6 digits. Whether is this might
- be unnecessary on 50 MHz or not please try to acquire the last two letters
- of your locator. When we do not copy the last two letters we have to
- calculate the closest distance to the grid locator in question.
- Mentioning the full locator will also enhance the effectivity of your
- (potential) QSO's, it is very likely that some people will ask for your
- full locator, and especially in short or minor openings this extra
- questions will take extra time and..... *noise*
- Please bear in mind that the full locator thing is only needed for the
- IARU contest, the UK6MG contest requires the raw grid locator only (and
- when you have one, a UK6MG number)
-
- For those of you who still need a few extra countries on 50 MHz from
- Europe: QRV will be the JY7SIX expedition, 5B4JE, presumably HV4NAC,
- presumably Z32BU (Macedonia), T97M (Bosnia), undoubtedly ISo and
- many other european contries as well.
-
-
- Hope to work you on six,
-
- Remco, PA3FYM

- Following announcement from K7VAY/KH6 is submitted for DXBULLETIN posting:
- KALAWAO EXTRAVAGANZA
- On June 3, several local amateurs will be heading to Kalawao County on
- Molokai to operate for several days. Kalawao County is the rarest of the
- rare in county-hunting circles. The county is comprised of the Kalaupapa
- Peninsula and is a significant historical location in the State of Hawaii.
- I'm sure that we all will feel the presence of Father Damien and remember
- what he had done for the patients there in the early years. Operators as of
- this writing will be Richard, AH6IO; Al, NH2Z; Ann, AH2CU; and Pat, K7VAY
- with possible additional operators. We expect to be QRV at approx 0000Z on
- 4 June and continue until approx 1800z 6 June. For the County Hunters, we
- will be checking in to the CW and SSB nets on 14056 and 14336 several
- times
- each day. Conditions and antennas permitting, we will also be found on all
- bands (80 thru 10 meters) either CW or SSB. All operators will use their own
- callsigns. QSL will be to callbook address with the exception of K7VAY. QSL
- info for K7VAY is: 99-891 Aumakiki Loop Aiea HI 96701. Every effort will be
- made to operate in other than the Extra or Advanced Class sub-bands. The
- propagation forecast is not too favorable but our goal is to do the best we
- can despite band conditions. If you hear us, please stop by for a contact
- and a posting on your local Packetcluster would be appreciated. 73 and
- ALOHA de Pat, K7VAY/KH6.

- Never used one, Michael, so I can't say how it does on intermod, but it
- puts out 10w, and the reviewer in 73 said that he worked quite a
- distance during a 6m opening with the 10w.

-
- Good points! That is exactly where this issue currently is legally.
- The LA 145.22 repeater war/lawsuits are being closely watched by those of
- us active in this.
-
- Operating on a closed repeater is not a trespass (at least on a common
- law trespass). It is probably a violation of "right to possession" codes.
- The owners of a closed repeater are damaged if I use that repeater without
- permission. Damages would probably be club dues used for operating expenses.
- This is uncharted legal ground, so who knows. For a while we were fishing
- for a law suit in order to challenge/define these laws as they pertain to
- radio repeater access.
-
- Of course you can avoid all this is you just operate simplex on the repeater
- input w/o intent to access the repeater, just use a clear frequency.
-
- Agreed, These laws and the FCC say the repeater
- owner has the right to deny access to any station by DPL, turning the
- machine off, etc. and that makes perfect sense. None of this is a problem
- until you only have 3 open repeaters. You can't put up another open 440
- repeater that the community demands because all the closed repeaters are
- "coordinated". The greater community is being damaged by the closed repeater
- owners and by the coordinating bodies. There is no doubt that as the
- ranks swell, more and more pressure will be put on the closed repeaters to
- open or make way for open machine. To speed the process up, class action
- suits against the owners and coordinating bodies are being considered.
-
- I like the "closed means no coordination" policy several people mentioned.
- We should all put pressure on the coordinating bodies to adopt this.
- Closed repeaters don't fit the spirit and intent of amateur radio.
-
- What do we do when the bands shrink, the ranks grow, and the number of
- closed repeaters increases? Do we just give up on the hobby? Do we operate
- only on the 1 or 2 frequencies where we can afford the dues? Should
- We really have to be INVITED to operate on the 440 band like Brian Kantor
- says? We are dangerously close to this in So. Cal., other cities can't
- be far behind.

- Because it was such a small insignificant part of their lives, they didn't
